Abstract

Chalcone derivatives have a wide range of biological activities such as: antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant In this study, 4 chalcone derivatives CCA, CC4B, CC4M and CC4H3N were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction between 4 derivatives of 1-phenylethanone and 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of NaOH as the catalyst and in ethanol as the solvent. The purity of the synthesized compounds were determinedby melting point and thin layer chromatography method. Their chemical structures are identified by some spectroscopic techniques, such as IR, MS and NMR. The antibacterial test results showed that CCA, CC4M, CC4H3N had inhibitory activity on S. aureus. In addition, CC4H3N also inhibited P. aeruginosa. Investigation of antioxidant activity by DPPH free radical scavenging method showed that CCA and CC4H3N had weak activity.
